Choose Bangkok and one other base for a ten-day first trip. Chiang Mai gives you a second city for temple visits, food and time in a different region. Phuket gives you a beach-based stay. Pick the combination you most want, then fit the flights around it before booking hotels.
The two plans below use ten calendar days and nine nights in Thailand. Arrival and departure count as travel days. They are suggested schedules, with room to change the order, rather than packages or promises of a particular transport service. Neither needs a different hotel every second night.
Start with one question: if you could keep only one experience outside Bangkok, would it be a few days exploring Chiang Mai or several unhurried days near a beach?
Count your usable days before choosing places
Write down the local date and time you land in Thailand, and the date and time you leave. A flight departing shortly after midnight belongs to the next calendar date; your trip to the airport may begin the previous evening. Count hotel nights separately from dates.
Now mark four kinds of time on your calendar:
- Arrival: getting through the airport, reaching the hotel and recovering from the journey
- Full days: no intercity travel, with the hotel already settled
- Transfer days: packing, checking out, reaching the next base and checking in
- Departure: leaving enough time for the airport and your airline's requirements
For example, arriving late on Day 1 and leaving early on Day 10 gives you eight intervening calendar days, not ten sightseeing days. The intercity journey still has to fit inside those eight.
Choose one main outing for each full day. Leave the rest flexible for meals, heat, rain, laundry or simply staying longer somewhere you enjoy. Booked activities work best on days that do not depend on an arriving flight.
Which two-base plan fits you?
Choose Bangkok and Chiang Mai if temple architecture, city walks and food interest you more than swimming. Chiang Mai's Old City gives you a defined area to explore: its moat and walls enclose a roughly square layout about 1.6 kilometres on each side. That describes the area, not a promise of a short or step-free sightseeing circuit. Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization
Choose Phuket and Bangkok if you want beach time and a city stay, and can arrange an arrival in Phuket and departure from Bangkok that fit your budget. Stay in one Phuket area rather than moving between beaches with your luggage. Use the Phuket beach-area comparison to choose the base before a hotel.
If you want Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a beach equally, decide which one to save for another trip. A third destination introduces another transfer and leaves fewer full days in each place. Keeping two bases is an editorial recommendation for this pace of trip, not a rule that every traveller must follow.
Plan A has six full days and two intercity transfer days between arrival and departure. Plan B has seven full days and one intercity transfer day. This difference may matter more than the number of attractions on your list.
Plan A: Bangkok and Chiang Mai, returning through Bangkok
This version suits a trip with international arrival and departure in Bangkok. It uses two destination bases but three hotel stays because you return to Bangkok before leaving Thailand.
| Day | Sleep | Main plan | Lower-energy choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bangkok | Arrive, check in and eat near the hotel | Keep the evening free |
| 2 | Bangkok | Choose one Old Town temple visit | Short visit, then a long indoor break |
| 3 | Bangkok | Take a focused neighbourhood walk | One small area close to transport |
| 4 | Bangkok | Choose a museum, shopping, or a day trip | Stay in Bangkok rather than take the day trip |
| 5 | Chiang Mai | Transfer and settle into the hotel | Dinner nearby; no timed evening booking |
| 6 | Chiang Mai | Explore a small part of the Old City | One temple and a café break |
| 7 | Chiang Mai | Choose one pre-checked activity | A local meal and a free afternoon |
| 8 | Chiang Mai | Keep a flexible day for what interested you | Rest, laundry or repeat a favourite area |
| 9 | Bangkok | Return to Bangkok and prepare to leave | Choose a hotel for the departure journey |
| 10 | — | Fly home | No essential sightseeing |
The hotel-night arithmetic is four Bangkok nights, four Chiang Mai nights and one final Bangkok night: nine in total. The Day 9 return is a planning buffer for a separate onward flight. It reduces dependence on a same-day domestic connection but cannot guarantee protection against disruption.
For Bangkok Day 2, the Grand Palace visit plan covers the checks that belong to that specific outing. For Day 3, Talat Noi offers a bounded walk. If you choose Ayutthaya on Day 4, use it as the day's main activity and keep the evening light before moving on.
For the least hotel handling, compare an itinerary that departs internationally from Chiang Mai, if suitable tickets are available for your dates. You could then keep Day 9 there and remove the return to Bangkok. Compare the complete fare and connection conditions before deciding; an international airport does not imply a direct flight to your home city.
Plan B: Phuket first, Bangkok last
This version starts in Phuket and finishes in Bangkok. It avoids returning to the first base, provided the international flights work for you. Reverse it if arriving in Bangkok and leaving from Phuket gives you the better complete journey.
| Day | Sleep | Main plan | Lower-energy choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Phuket | Arrive and reach the chosen hotel area | Eat nearby and recover |
| 2 | Phuket | Get to know your immediate beach area | Stay close to the hotel |
| 3 | Phuket | Choose one outing away from the hotel | A short outing with an easy return |
| 4 | Phuket | Leave a flexible beach or indoor day | Follow conditions rather than a fixed plan |
| 5 | Phuket | Enjoy a final local day and pack | Avoid a late-returning tour |
| 6 | Bangkok | Transfer and settle into the hotel | No timed attraction booking |
| 7 | Bangkok | Choose one Old Town outing | One main stop with a rest break |
| 8 | Bangkok | Neighbourhood walk or museum | An indoor option if useful |
| 9 | Bangkok | Flexible final day and departure preparation | Stay near the hotel or convenient transport |
| 10 | — | Fly home | No essential sightseeing |
This uses five Phuket nights and four Bangkok nights, with one intercity transfer day. There is no boat trip in the essential itinerary. If you add one, check current conditions and the operator's arrangements; keep a land-based alternative that you would genuinely enjoy.
Do not treat landing in Phuket as arriving at your beach hotel. AOT's airport transport listing shows the Smart Bus serving a sequence of areas including Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. Your chosen beach changes the onward journey. Confirm the actual stop, operating information and final hotel connection before relying on that service. Phuket Airport Smart Bus listing
Give the intercity journey its own calendar block
Compare journeys from hotel door to hotel door. The flight duration shown in a search result leaves out several steps.
Use this editable calculation for each move:
Hotel checkout and packing + travel to the correct airport + your airline's required airport time + scheduled flight + arrival procedures and bags + onward transfer + check-in time.
Here is an arithmetic example, not a measured Bangkok–Chiang Mai or Bangkok–Phuket journey: 30 minutes to finish packing, 60 minutes to reach the airport, 120 minutes at the airport, a 90-minute flight, 45 minutes after landing, 60 minutes to reach the hotel and 20 minutes to check in add up to 425 minutes, or 7 hours 5 minutes. Replace every figure with information for your actual journey, and add a separate disruption allowance. The example's airport time is not a universal airline requirement.
This is why both plans leave the transfer-day evening open. An earlier departure can mean an earlier alarm rather than an extra relaxed sightseeing morning.
Read the airport code on every Bangkok flight. Suvarnabhumi is BKK and Don Mueang is DMK; changing between them creates a separate ground journey. For the city portion, use the relevant Suvarnabhumi arrival guide or Don Mueang arrival guide.
If you substitute a train for Plan A's flight, rebuild that part of the calendar using the chosen train's actual departure and arrival dates. Check the service on SRT's official D-Ticket site. An overnight journey changes both your hotel-night count and the following morning's energy; do not simply paste it into the daytime transfer slot.
Check the region, then the actual conditions
Seasonal patterns can help you choose between the plans, but the decision belongs to the regions you will visit. TMD explains that the northeast monsoon commonly brings cooler, drier conditions particularly to northern and northeastern Thailand, while bringing rain to the south, especially its east coast. The timing varies between years. TMD monsoon explanation, in Thai
Use the region-by-region weather guide when comparing months. Close to travel, check current forecasts, warnings and local conditions instead of treating a seasonal description as a forecast. Leave the flexible days where they are: they make it easier to move an outdoor outing without changing hotels.
Fill in this before paying for hotels
