The most useful number when planning a MICHELIN-listed meal is your total spending limit. Set that first, then use the guide to find cooking that interests you, check the restaurant's own menu and settle how you will get a table. This works for a bowl of noodles, shared Thai dishes or a carefully budgeted tasting menu.
Decide whether your limit covers food alone or the whole outing. A THB 1,200 budget for two people looks different when it must also cover drinks, service, tax and transport. The examples below show how to turn a restaurant listing into that calculation, without treating an award as a price guarantee.
Information checked: 6 October 2026. Menu prices and booking terms can change before your visit. Examples illustrate planning choices, not a restaurant ranking or a firsthand dining review.
Read the recognition and the price separately
MICHELIN's categories answer different questions. Use this distinction before filtering restaurants:
| Recognition | What it tells you | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| One, Two or Three MICHELIN Stars | Recognition of the cooking, with progressively higher distinctions | The actual menu, total charge and whether its format suits your party |
| Bib Gourmand | Good cooking with an emphasis on value | Whether your proposed order, drinks and travel fit your own limit |
| MICHELIN Selected | A restaurant recommended in the guide without a Star or Bib Gourmand | Its menu and price level; selection itself sets no personal budget |
Stars evaluate factors including ingredients, flavour, technique and consistency. They are not a count of courses or an indication of how formal you must dress. One, Two and Three Stars respectively signal cooking worth a stop, a detour or a special journey. MICHELIN's explanation of Stars
Bib Gourmand is the logical place to start a value-focused search, but affordability depends on what you order. MICHELIN explains that its value threshold varies between countries. Selected restaurants also merit consideration; they have been assessed by its inspectors, even though they do not hold either distinction. MICHELIN Guide 101
There is plenty to explore beyond Stars. At the 2026 Thailand edition's launch, MICHELIN reported 137 Bib Gourmand and 288 Selected restaurants. Those are launch figures, not a promise that every venue still operates under identical conditions. Check the current restaurant entry and its own website before committing. Make a shortlist that fits your day
Start with the area you will already be visiting. Save two or three possibilities with their exact branch and address, then inspect the menus. A distant restaurant may make sense for a special meal; for an ordinary lunch, the return journey can absorb the saving on food.
Next choose a meal format. A single rice or noodle dish is easy to cost. Shared dishes require a table-level calculation: mains, vegetables, rice, drinks and any extras, divided by the people sharing. A tasting menu gives a clearer starting price, but may require the whole table to choose the same course count.
Check the meal you can actually buy. A lunch offer may have restricted days, a set may require two diners, and an attractive seafood price may apply per piece or by weight. Ask about those conditions instead of calculating from a headline. For a solo meal, establish whether there is a minimum order or booking restriction before planning around a shared set.
Keep one nearby alternative that fits your spending and time limits. It should be practical even if the first restaurant has no table or your preferred dish is unavailable.
Work out the bill before comparing restaurants
Read the price footnote. Both restaurants discussed below publish prices excluding 10% service charge and 7% VAT. Their menus therefore cannot be compared directly with a confirmed all-inclusive quote.
For an estimate where 10% service is added first and 7% VAT is then applied to that subtotal, multiply the chargeable food and drinks by 1.10, then 1.07. The combined multiplier is 1.177: THB 1,000 becomes THB 1,177. This is an explicit calculation assumption, not confirmation of either restaurant's billing sequence or rounding. Ask for the final payable amount if your ceiling is tight.
For a price described as “net” or “inclusive,” check what is included before adding anything. Avoid counting service and tax twice. Also check water, rice, mandatory supplements, corkage and any minimum spend relevant to your booking. An optional pairing can be a large separate decision; include it only if you want it and have its current price.
A deposit needs two entries in your notes: money payable now, and whether it is credited against the final bill. A credited deposit is part-payment, not an extra meal cost. A possible cancellation charge belongs in a separate risk line, because it can apply even if you never eat.
Two real menus, two different budget decisions
Thai Niyom: build an order from individual prices
Thai Niyom appears in MICHELIN's current Bangkok Bib Gourmand selection. Match the Mahatun Plaza address on Phloen Chit Road to the individual guide entry.
Its official menu lists chicken khao soi at THB 220, ground pork with chilli and holy basil over rice at THB 165, and charred cabbage with soy sauce at THB 135. Prices exclude 7% VAT and 10% service. These are individual dish prices, not a promoted set. Check portions and availability when ordering.
Here is a two-person worksheet using those three dishes. Drinks, transport and spare money are our illustrative allowances, not restaurant quotes or fare estimates:
| Item for two people | THB |
|---|---|
| Three listed dishes: 220 + 165 + 135 | 520.00 |
| Assumed drinks allowance before charges | 160.00 |
| Food and drink subtotal | 680.00 |
| Estimated bill using 680 × 1.10 × 1.07 | 800.36 |
| Assumed return transport allowance | 200.00 |
| Spare money for changes or extras | 150.00 |
| Total planning envelope | 1,150.36 |
Against a THB 1,200 ceiling for two, this leaves THB 49.64 beyond the spare-money allowance. Replace every allowance with your own figures. If drinks or transport exceed them, adjust the order before adding dessert. This exercise does not promise that the chosen quantities satisfy every appetite.
The restaurant's website has a reservation request form whose message says confirmation follows later. Treat submitting it as a request until the restaurant confirms. Its separate second-floor hotpot restaurant has a different menu; do not transfer this example's prices to that venue. Thai Niyom reservations and venue information
Le Du: test whether a planned splurge fits
Le Du is listed with One Star in MICHELIN's 2026 Thailand selection. Its own reservation page advertises Le Du Journey at THB 4,500++ and Le Du Experience at THB 5,500++, with four- and six-course formats and 10% service plus 7% VAT.
Using the calculation assumption above, those base prices become THB 5,296.50 and THB 6,473.50 per person before additional purchases or transport. A THB 6,000 total limit would leave THB 703.50 after the lower-priced menu estimate. Check beverage and supplement costs before deciding that this is enough.
The published rules require everyone in a group to choose the same course count; groups above five must take six courses. Dietary requirements should be supplied at least 72 hours ahead. Changes need at least 72 hours' notice, and the page states a THB 5,000-per-person charge for later cancellations or changes; late party-size reductions are not allowed. Read the selected booking's terms before confirming.
This is a useful comparison with the à-la-carte example: a pre-set menu simplifies ordering, while group rules and cancellation exposure can make it unsuitable for uncertain plans.
Turn a saved restaurant into a workable booking
Use the restaurant's official website or the booking service it links to. Both Le Du's current guide entry and Thai Niyom's entry direct diners to book with the restaurant. A guide page without bookable tables is not proof that the restaurant takes no reservations.
For your chosen date, record the branch, arrival time, party size, menu and confirmation reference. Ask about the table-holding period if you may arrive late, and save a contact route you can use while travelling. Put any cancellation deadline in your calendar using Thailand local time.
Do not infer walk-in rules from a restaurant's popularity. The pages checked for these examples did not establish a complete walk-in or queue procedure; Thai Niyom's retrieved page also did not establish cancellation or deposit terms. Ask whether walk-ins are accepted, when a queue opens, whether the whole party must be present, and whether joining it guarantees service. None of those answers should be assumed from the award.
For a walk-in meal, set your own latest acceptable seating time. If you need to leave at 14:00, ask the staff whether the likely wait and meal duration fit. A backup nearby is more useful than a second famous restaurant across town. Any waiting-time estimate remains conditional on that day's service.
